Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society is among the most active and expert archaeological societies in the UK.

The Society, originally called The Scarborough and District Archaeological Society, was founded in 1947 by a group of enthusiasts keen to preserve and research the rich archaeological inheritance of the area. Originally an 'excavating' society, over the years our activities have expanded.

Excavations and fieldwork

Since 1947 much practical archaeological research has been carried out, including such important sites as Ayton Castle, Crossgates Romano-British settlement and Hatterboard Deserted Medieval Village. Our campaign of urban excavations in Scarborough gained national recognition in 1990 when we won the prestigious Pitt Rivers Award, given for the best project carried out in the UK by a voluntary body. We were runners-up for the award again in 2000. In 1995 we won a further national award from the Association for Industrial Archaeology for our project at Saltwick Alum Works. See the excavations section for a database of excavations carried out over the past 15 years and informaton about current work.

Lectures and meetings

Each autumn we have a series of six lectures on an archaeological, historical or architectural subject. In the winter a further nine lectures and meetings are held on diverse topics, including the Invitation Lecture given by a prestigious speaker and to which other local history societies are invited. See the events section for our current programme of events.

Publications

Our annual Transactions (free to Full Members) cover local archaeological and historical subjects whilst the books in the Research Reports series have covered subjects as diverse as the Rosedale Mines and Railway and Pottery in the Scarborough Museum. See the publications section for a listing of our publications and the contents lists of the Society's Transactions.

Individual reports are published on many excavations. Recently published is Medieval Scarborough: Studies in Trade and Civic Life, price £15 (£12 to members), also available from local bookshops.

Society documents

We are a registered charity; our Constitution describes our aims and the rules by which the Society is run. The Annual Report for our last full year (2006-7) is also available. The next Annual General Meeting will be next April. See the Events page for details.

How to become a member of the Society

The annual subscription fee is £13.00 for Full Members, £10.00 for an additional member of the same household and £6.00 for students.
