This is the text of the aims, as originally published. The Initiative was a great success, involving the community in events, publishing this website and two books, and leaving a legacy of project groups which continue to explore Scarborough's heritage.
The Scarborough Community Heritage Initiative is a project to enhance knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of Scarborough's heritage, based on the evidence collected in the Old Town over the past 15 years by Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society.
We encourage everyone who lives and works in Scarborough to participate in the initiative, for this will contribute to a greater sense of community. We also invite visitors to share in our rich heritage and thus benefit from an exciting new interpretation of the town's history and archaeology.
The two-year project, which started in March 2002, will include:
- walks, talks and celebrations
- a new illustrated guide to historic Scarborough
- a substantial scholarly book conveying the latest knowledge about the archaeology and history of Scarborough
- a dynamic and comprehensive website, recording and supporting the project
This project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council (Community Revenue Grant) and gifts in kind from local businesses; but its driving energy comes from enthusiastic members of the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society.
