Richard
Hurd of BURNISTON: 3 weeks ago was in house of Samuel Bell in Burniston when
Robert Hodshon & Thomas Banks entered and asked if they had any beasts for
sale.
They were sent into the next room from the head and one shoulder. When
they had this they called it a cow and asked where the other was. Bell answered
that it was a heifer that never had a calf.
Hodshon and Banks bargained with
Bell for ¾ of a horse @3s.6d. per quarter. The informant also says that Hodshon
and Banks know it was a horse as he heard them own up to this, but afterwards
they sold it in Scarborough market for cow’s flesh.
