Excavation in progress in the area of the clay quarries to the east of Paradise House

A number of trenches were excavated in the grounds of Paradise House in advance of plans to develop the land for housing. The excavation discovered that the area to the east of the house had been quarried in the middle of the 18th century to get clay for brickmaking and that this had destroyed any earlier remains. However the land to the west and north of the house was not quarried and here the excavation found traces of several medieval structures. None of these buildings were occupied after the 16th century when the area seems to have been turned over to gardens.
