Summary of results

The castle ditch was made in the 1160s

The castle ditch was made in the 1160s

Construction work to create a fenced playground in the bottom of the Castle dykes below the barbican revealed a lot of recent debris in the bottom of the ditch. A large proportion of this was probably dumped during repairs to the castle curtain wall at the beginning of the last century. A photograph from the time shows a barrow run leading down the slope from the wall into the base of the ditch.
