Investigating the remains of the timber framework

Preserved down a passageway on the west side of this building is one of the few examples of a medieval timber frame surviving in Scarborough. A drawn and photographic record was made of the timberwork and the details of a carved corner post were noted. This is traditionally thought to show the godess ‘Justitia’ with below, the much smaller figure of a fisherwoman with a basket over her shoulder. The quality of the carving suggests the timber frame was on the outside of a high status building, perhaps the medieval ‘Hall of Pleas’ where justice was dispensed.
