The wall built using stones robbed from the abandoned friary

The wall built using stones robbed from the abandoned friary

Of the two trenches excavated at the rear of this property, one encountered ground which had been disturbed in the recent past, whilst the second found evidence for the demolition of the medieval Franciscan Friary represented by a clay layer with stone fragments and lumps of mortar. The demolition layer probably dated from the 16th century and may indicate that the site lay within the boundary of the friary. Stones taken from one of the demolished buildings were re-used on the site to construct a massive stone wall of unknown purpose. As part of the record for this site, the cellars of numbers 10-10A St Sepulchre Street were investigated and found to be of stone construction.
