The excavation found the stone foundations of a 16th-century house

The excavation at the top of Long Greece Steps found traces of several medieval drains running down the natural cliff slope overlooking the harbour. These were buried below a thick layer of beach sand which had been dumped onto the slope in the 14th century to help level the site. The consolidated ground became the yard at the rear of a house fronting onto East Sandgate, but was built over in the 16th century. The building remains included a hearth constructed of re-used limestone roof tiles.
