SCARBOROUGH
Archaeological and Historical Society
In 2002-2005 Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society ran a project called the "Scarborough Community Heritage Initiative" to enhance knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of Scarborough's history and heritage. The project involved the community in various events, supported the publication of this website and two books (including the one described below) and left a legacy of interest groups continuing to explore Scarborough's heritage.
The Archaeology of Medieval Scarborough
Excavation and Research 1987–2004
On Sale Now!
Little remains of the large and important town which stood in
the shadow of Scarborough's imposing castle in the Middle
Ages. Nearly 20 years of excavation and historical research by
the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society have,
however, reconstructed the main features of what was a vibrant
centre of medieval urban life. This book describes that research
and analyses it to build up a comprehensive picture of what the
town looked like between 1150 and 1550.
Drawing upon evidence obtained from its excavations, old
maps and documentary sources, the book depicts
Scarborough’s defences, streets, property boundaries, water
supplies, churches and friaries, markets, industries and harbour
as they appeared in the Middle Ages. This picture is preceded
by a summary of the history of the settlement of Scarborough
from prehistoric to modern times. Over 80 maps, drawings
and photographs guide the reader through the technical
evidence and analysis.
Based on meticulous scholarship, methodological rigour and
astute interpretation, The Archaeology of Medieval Scarborough sets a
benchmark of excellence in the study of the now mostly
hidden features of this important medieval town.
